What is foundation bolting?
The wood that rests directly on the foundation is called the mud sill. Until the 1940s, home builders often did not bolt the mud sill to the foundation. This creates a serious structural weakness that can allow your home to slide off its foundation during an earthquake. The mud sill should be bolted down to the foundation to prevent serious earthquake damage.

Foundation replacement is required when a foundation is in poor condition. The two main reasons for replacement are cracking and deterioration. The replacement process consists of several steps. First, the house is stabilized through a method called shoring. Next, the section of damaged foundation is broken up with jackhammers. When the section is removed, the iron support bars and concrete forms are setup. Now that the section is prepared, new concrete is poured into place. When the concrete is settled, the forms are stripped off and all the surrounding dirt is replaced. After all these steps, your home is nice and sturdy.
One other option to foundation replacement is building a sister foundation. When a section of a foundation can not be replaced, an additional foundation is built. This second foundation will lie directly behind the original one. The new foundation will hold the weight of the building, removing the weight off of the unsafe section.

Earthquake Retrofitting California
Retrofitting is a process that ties a home together. It increases the resistance to earthquake damage and the risk of injury. In short, it significantly strengthens your home.
A safe home is one that can withstand Earthquake shocking forces and is a home built on a firm foundation. By securely fastening the house to the foundation and securely connecting the house components together, the chances of withstanding the next earthquake are greatly improved.
This is achieved by installing and bolting the house to the foundation with varying styles of foundation anchors and straps. These anchors and straps suppress horizontal and vertical movement
